Winter Social Activities
Our Winter Session is hosted by Caltech’s Center for Technology & Management Education. Nestled in the ‘Crown of the Valley’ in Southern California, Pasadena is known for its rich cultural, social, and entertainment centres.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory
On this private tour, WS participants will visit the JPL campus, the Spacecraft Assembly Facility, as well as Mission Control. Much of the Space Flight Operations Facility work includes collecting data from satellites and spacecraft in deep space, which monitor everything from the Moon and beyond. The Deep Space Network collects information received by dishes throughout the world, from satellites including Voyager I and II, Juno and many more.
The Huntington Library
The Huntington Library, Art Collection and Botanical Gardens. Encompassing about 130 acres, the botanical gardens feature living collections in 16 stunning themed gardens with more than 83,000 living plants including rare and endangered species, and a laboratory for botanical conservation and research. The library contains rare books and manuscripts. Included in the collection is the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer’s, The Canterbury Tales and a Gutenberg Bible.
Old Town Pasadena
Old Pasadena began as the center of a research hub where science and research institutions such as Caltech and Jet Propulsion Laboratory and companies such as Beckman Instruments and Aerojet were founded. With 22 blocks designated as a National Register Historic District, Old Pasadena abounds with impeccably restored late 19th and early 20th-century architecture. “Old Pas,” as locals affectionately call it, offers open-air shopping plazas, hidden laneways and a lively strip of retailers and restaurants along the main drag, Colorado Boulevard.
Walt Disney Studios
For 100 years, The Walt Disney Studios has been the foundation on which The Walt Disney Company was built. Today it brings quality movies, episodic storytelling, and stage plays to consumers throughout the world. The Walt Disney Studios encompasses a collection of respected film studios, including Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, Searchlight Pictures, and 20th Century Studios. It is also home to Disney Theatrical Group, producer of world-class stage shows, as well as Disney Music Group.
Venice Beach
Venice Beach is one of Southern California’s most popular attractions. This iconic site attracts visitors from all over the world. The Venice Beach Boardwalk stretches over two (2) miles and hosts hundreds of street vendors and performers along with numerous privately owned restaurants and food venues. The Venice Beach Recreation Center offers various activities including but not limited to basketball, paddle tennis and handball tournaments, bodybuilding at the world famous Muscle Beach Venice gym, and other special events.
Our cultural visits will include include the Huntington Library, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Walt Disney Studios, a gourmet cooking class, and a professional sporting event.
