The PhD Track

The PhD track at the BAI Winter School at Caltech aims to support ten PhD candidates in developing and publishing their research on contextual AI in top-ranked academic journals.

The primary goal of the PhD track is to help participants structure and prepare their articles for publication. Each paper will receive written feedback from the faculty throughout the session, offering suggestions on relevant articles, questions, and substantive comments to enhance each text.

At Caltech, the track will include a methods seminar, poster sessions for the presentation and discussion of participants’ work, selected workshops on contextual AI, and written feedback from the session’s faculty.

There is also the possibility of extending the track to other symposiums in Paris and Mysore, India over the next 18 months, with the ultimate goal of publishing an edited book on contextual AI in 2026.

Schedule

The PhD track will run concurrently with the BAI Winter School from February 3-12, 2025.

The track will begin with a research methods seminar, which will include a review of our survey of the top 20 academic journal editors in the field, a framework and process for preparing research for publication, and an analysis of using LLMs/agents in the preliminary research and documentation stages.

Morning sessions of the PhD track will delve into core subjects of contextual AI, including a seminar on contextual AI, a workshop on building agentic systems, and workshops on leveraging these systems in production, transportation, and communication.

A tour of the Caltech research projects, a guest conference on enhancing the explainability of AI models, as well as as well as visit to the ArtCenter to explore their approaches in addressing  the UX/UI challenges of collaborative intelligence will round out the pedagogical offer.

Afternoon sessions will involve poster presentations, where one or two PhD candidates will detail their current research. Under the guidance of the track faculty, these presentations will be discussed and debated by all participants.

A PhD short paper competition, held concurrently with the PhD track, will provide an opportunity for students to address a specific industry challenge by exploring techniques for adapting AI models using contextual data.

Social Activities

Participants will enjoy the welcome and farewell dinners with the session’s faculty and students from the various tracks. Planned cultural visits include the Huntington Library, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Universal Studios, and a professional sporting event.

More information on the social activities can be found here.
